Remarks Honoring our 2024 David Goldberg Award Recipients: The Root Social Justice Center and Youth 4 Change
The Root Social Justice Center is a Vermont-based Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), woman identified, and majority queer led racial justice organization. The Root recently celebrated 10 years of providing programming, events, and resources for thousands of people and organizations across Vermont. Their staff embodies the community they serve, with many of the staff additionally identifying as queer, as youth, and/ or differently abled.
The Root, and their Executive Director Shela Linton, have partnered, challenged, and supported Voices through collective efforts to bring about policies that move our state closer to justice. We have been incredibly fortunate to co-host powerful events with the Root and collaborate with them to establish Vermont’s Office of Child, Youth, and Family Advocate. Shela consistently and lovingly challenges us all to show up authentically and to build supportive networks within community.
In their steadfast commitment to making space for those who have been impacted by oppressive systems, they have carved out a powerful path toward healing, accountability, accessibility, and transformation. Our work is better because of the Root and because of Shela. Shelaunderstands the urgency of the moment - yet she encourages balance, reflection and thoughtful, intentional work rather than reactionary responses that make us feel better but are not effective.
Youth 4 Change, The Root’s student-led activist group, has echoed these same principles in their work, empowering and amplifying the voices of all youth, centering youth who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, low-income, disabled, or who have been impacted by systemic injustice. We are grateful to have the opportunity to celebrate with Shela in this shared anniversary year.
On a personal note - I have deep love for Shela - she has become a mentor and a friend and I am better because I have had the chance to learn from her. I am honored to recognize Shela, the Root Social Justice Center and Youth 4 Change with our David Goldberg award.
